Trump Declares 100% Tariff on Overseas-Made Computer Chips

Breaking: In a significant escalation of trade policy, President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States will impose a 100% tariff on semiconductor chips and computer processors imported from overseas. This move targets global technology supply chains and was revealed during a White House press conference with Apple CEO Tim Cook.

The new tariffs will not apply to companies that are actively building or have committed to manufacturing chip infrastructure within the United States. “We’ll be putting a tariff on of approximately 100% on chips and semiconductors,” Trump declared from the Oval Office. “But if you’re building in the United States of America, there’s no charge.”

The announcement coincided with Apple’s commitment to invest an additional $100 billion in U.S. manufacturing over the next four years. Following this news, Apple shares soared 5.1% during trading and another 3.5% after hours, positioning the company advantageously against heightened trade barriers.

However, this policy could significantly increase costs for a variety of consumer goods. These include:

  • Electronics
  • Automobiles
  • Household appliances
  • Other consumer goods that rely on semiconductor components
