Record-Breaking Launch: Nintendo Switch 2 Sells 3.5M Units in First Week
Nintendo’s latest gaming console, the Switch 2, has set a new record, selling over 3.5 million units worldwide in just four days following its June 5, 2025 launch. This achievement marks the highest global launch sales for any Nintendo console in history, surpassing even the original Switch’s impressive debut.
The Switch 2, retailing at 49,980 yen (approximately $399), boasts significant upgrades that enhance the gaming experience. These include:
- Magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers that can function as computer mice
- A larger, more responsive screen
- Enhanced processing power
While maintaining backward compatibility with original Switch games, the console also offers exclusive new titles like Mario Kart World.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa expressed confidence in the Switch 2’s potential, stating it is “on pace to outsell the Switch.” The original Switch became Nintendo’s best-selling home console with over 146 million units sold. The success of the Switch 2 signals strong consumer demand for next-generation gaming despite economic uncertainties, positioning Nintendo ahead of competitors Microsoft and Sony in the console wars.
