OpenAI Unveils Stargate Norway: Its First Major European AI Data Center
OpenAI has announced the launch of Stargate Norway, marking its first major AI data center initiative in Europe. This significant expansion of the company’s global infrastructure project is located in Kvandal, near Narvik in Northern Norway. The facility will initially deliver 230MW of capacity, with plans to expand by an additional 290MW.
This project is a joint venture between the British infrastructure firm Nscale and Norwegian energy company Aker. Both companies are contributing approximately $1 billion to the initial phase. The data center aims to deploy 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs by the end of 2026. Running entirely on renewable hydroelectric power, it stands as one of Europe’s most significant AI infrastructure investments.
“Europe needs more compute to realize the full potential of AI for all Europeans — from developers and researchers to startups and scientists — and we want to help make that happen,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. The facility represents OpenAI’s commitment to providing sovereign compute capacity for European AI development, while supporting the region’s growing demand for AI infrastructure.
