Robinson & MagniX Join Forces to Develop Electric R66 Helicopter for 2026 Launch
Robinson Helicopter Company and electric propulsion specialist MagniX have joined forces to develop an all-electric variant of the popular R66 helicopter. The first flight of the demonstrator is planned for late 2026.
The partnership will leverage MagniX’s lightweight HeliStorm electric engines, which weigh approximately 165 pounds, a significant reduction compared to the current 91kg Rolls-Royce RR300 turbine. The electric powertrain will be integrated with MagniX’s Samson batteries, providing about one hour of flight endurance plus reserves.
“There are inherent advantages to low-disk loading that will be highly efficient for hovering flight, with less restrictions on the time you can hover,” said Robinson CEO David Smith. The R66 has one-fifth to one-sixth the disk loading of some eVTOL aircraft in development.
With over 1,500 R66 helicopters currently in service and more than 100 units sold annually, this electrification could significantly impact the vertical lift market.
