Meta Enlists OpenAI’s ChatGPT Co-Founder for New AI Superintelligence Lab
Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, recently announced a significant addition to their team. Shengjia Zhao, a former OpenAI researcher and co-creator of ChatGPT, will take on the role of chief scientist at Meta’s newly established Superintelligence Labs. This move is a part of Meta’s ambitious strategy to develop artificial general intelligence that outperforms human capabilities in all cognitive tasks.
Zhao, known for his instrumental role in developing both ChatGPT and OpenAI’s reasoning model o1, will collaborate closely with Zuckerberg and Alexandr Wang. Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, joined Meta as Chief AI Officer following a hefty $14.3 billion investment. This strategic move is a part of Meta’s broader talent acquisition strategy, which has reportedly included lucrative compensation packages to attract top AI researchers from rival companies.
Meta’s aggressive push towards superintelligence comes amidst increasing competition in the AI industry. The tech behemoth has been actively recruiting talent from leading companies such as OpenAI, Google, Apple, and Anthropic. This has been coupled with substantial investments in computing infrastructure. The appointment of Zhao underscores Meta’s resolve to compete head-to-head with OpenAI and Google in the race to develop artificial superintelligence. However, the timeline and feasibility of such advanced technology remain a topic of debate.
