US Welcomes First Hydrogen-Electric Aircraft Conversion Program

Stralis Aircraft, an Australian aviation technology company, has successfully secured its first US customer for the conversion of aircraft to hydrogen-electric power. The California-based Aviate Enterprises will collaborate with Stralis to create America’s first hydrogen-electric Beechcraft Bonanza aircraft.

At present, Stralis is in the process of testing its Hydrogen Electric Propulsion System (HEPS) with two Bonanza A36 aircraft in Australia, affectionately named “Bonnie” and “Clyde.” The company is integrating its unique fuel cell system, liquid hydrogen tanks, and electric motors into the existing Bonanza aircraft, thereby replacing the current piston engine.

“We are going to change the world of aviation with hydrogen-fueled aircraft,” proclaimed Timothy Devine, the founder and president of Aviate Enterprises.

Stralis successfully completed ground-based testing at Brisbane International Airport in 2024 and has plans for its first hydrogen test flight in Australia in late 2025. The hydrogen-electric Bonanza aircraft is designed to outperform both battery and fossil fuel aircraft in terms of payload range.
