Historic Upgrade: Cessna Skyhawk Equipped with Electronic Ignition
Textron Aviation has recently announced a significant modernization of the world’s most popular training aircraft. All new Cessna Skyhawk aircraft now feature dual electronic ignition systems, replacing the traditional magnetos. This historic upgrade coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Cessna 172, which first took to the skies in June 1955.
The Lycoming dual Electronic Ignition System (EIS) is a game-changer. It uses solid-state components with fewer moving parts, which leads to:
- Improved fuel efficiency
- Extended maintenance intervals
- Better engine performance
This system eliminates the need for the dreaded 500-hour magneto inspections, while maintaining critical redundancy through two independent electronic ignition systems.
“This solid-state electronic technology improves maintenance intervals, fuel efficiency, and engine performance, ultimately reducing aircraft operating costs,” according to Textron officials.
With over 45,000 Cessna 172 aircraft delivered worldwide, this represents the most significant update to the platform in decades. It brings one of aviation’s most conservative designs into the modern era.
