Intel Announces Major Job Cuts Under New Leadership
Intel, in a recent announcement, stated that it will be eliminating approximately 25,000 jobs by the end of 2025. This major decision is part of a comprehensive cost-cutting effort under the leadership of their new CEO, Lip-Bu Tan. The massive layoffs, which represent about 15% of Intel’s core workforce, will reduce the company’s global headcount from 108,900 employees to roughly 75,000 by the end of the year.
“There are no more blank checks,” Tan cautioned investors during the company’s second-quarter earnings call. He further emphasized, “Every investment must make economic sense.” The restructuring plan includes both layoffs and natural attrition. In addition, Intel is also implementing a return-to-office mandate by September and scaling back major international factory investments in Germany and Poland.
The job cuts come at a time when Intel is striving to regain its footing against competitors like Nvidia and AMD in the AI chipmaking race. Once a dominant force in the semiconductor industry, Intel has lost significant ground in recent years, particularly in the mobile and AI chip markets. Despite reporting a $2.9 billion net loss in Q2 2025, the company’s revenue of $12.9 billion exceeded analyst expectations.
