Urgent UK Health Alert: 38 Reported Cases of Botulism from Unlicensed Botox Injections

Health officials in the UK have issued an urgent warning following the report of 38 cases of botulism poisoning. These cases, reported between June 4 and July 14, 2025, are linked to unlicensed Botox-like cosmetic injections. The UK Health Security Agency confirmed that the initial cases were reported in the north-east of England, with subsequent cases emerging in the east of England and East Midlands.

The affected patients exhibited severe symptoms, including:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Slurred speech
  • Breathing difficulties requiring respiratory support

Investigations suggest the use of unlicensed Botox-like products administered by practitioners who have since cooperated with authorities and ceased offering these treatments.

Dr. Alison Cave, chief safety officer at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, emphasized the risks associated with unlicensed products. These products lack safety safeguards and can “endanger the health of people who take them.” The agency advises consumers to verify their practitioner uses licensed products and check professional credentials before undergoing cosmetic procedures.
