Sharp Decline in U.S. Tourism: International Arrivals Drop by 6.6%
New data from the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) unveils a worrying trend for U.S. tourism. International visitor arrivals fell by 6.6 percent in June 2025 compared to the same period in the previous year. This decline puts an estimated $12.5 billion in visitor spending at risk, as per the projections of the World Travel & Tourism Council.
The traffic from Canada to the U.S. experienced the steepest drop at 4.9 percent. Other major markets, including Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Germany, all recorded negative growth, with decreases of 1.4%, 5%, and 1.6% respectively. In contrast, outbound U.S. travel saw a minor increase of 0.2 percent, reaching a level 20 percent higher than that of 2019.
Industry experts attribute this decline to the strong dollar, which erodes foreign purchasing power. They recommend that travel advisors highlight the price advantages of traveling abroad and counsel clients to secure refundable rates. In response to the situation, hoteliers are shifting their focus to domestic promotions, offering bundled parking and dining credits to attract weekend travelers.
