Delta Air Lines Flight’s Engine Fire Triggers Emergency Landing at LAX
A Delta Air Lines flight destined for Atlanta executed a dramatic emergency return to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on July 18, 2025. This was due to an engine fire that broke out shortly after takeoff. Flight DL446, a Boeing 767-400ER carrying 226 passengers and crew, had just departed from LAX when the left engine ignited. The aircraft was compelled to make a swift U-turn after leaving the ground.
The incident was broadcasted live on the LA Flights YouTube channel, displaying flames spewing from the aircraft’s left engine as it descended back to LAX. The pilots promptly declared an emergency and adhered to the prescribed safety procedures. Air traffic controllers gave priority to the aircraft’s return, with emergency crews stationed along the runway.
The aircraft touched down safely at approximately 12:24 PM, with no injuries reported. This incident is the second engine fire at LAX this week, following a similar occurrence with a Sun Country Airlines Boeing 737 on Monday.
Delta provided a replacement aircraft for passengers to continue their journey to Atlanta later that evening. The Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating both incidents.
