Unprecedented Summer Travel Budgets in Japan: A Record $670 Per Trip
Japanese travelers are splurging like never before on summer vacations, with the average budget for 2025 trips hitting an all-time high of 104,901 yen (approximately $670). This is the first instance of spending crossing the 100,000 yen mark.
This significant surge, which surpasses the previous peak set in 2015, is attributed to a combination of factors. These include rising wages at major corporations, a rebound in domestic travel, and a renewed interest in leisure experiences in the aftermath of the pandemic.
Domestic travel budgets have seen a year-over-year increase of 10.6%, amounting to 151,938 yen per trip. However, this record spending is also indicative of the skyrocketing hotel and accommodation prices across the country.
The travel industry is gearing up for a season of high expectations, but also anticipates logistical challenges. This is due to demand outstripping supply in many popular destinations.
