AMD Set to Resume AI Chip Exports to China

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced on Tuesday that it is set to resume shipments of its MI308 artificial intelligence chips to China. This comes after the U.S. Commerce Department agreed to review its export license applications. The news resulted in AMD’s stock surging over 6%, as investors welcomed the potential end to restrictions that had previously cost the company an estimated $800 million.

This development follows a similar announcement from Nvidia regarding its H20 chips, signaling a potential shift in the Trump administration’s approach to AI chip exports. Both the MI308 and H20 chips were specifically designed for the Chinese market. This was done to comply with U.S. export control rules while also meeting demand in the world’s second-largest economy.

In a statement to CNBC, AMD praised “the progress made by the Trump administration in advancing trade negotiations and its commitment to U.S. AI leadership”.

The policy change comes as the administration has rolled back the Biden-era “AI diffusion rule” and promised to implement simpler chip export regulations. However, comprehensive new policies have yet to be announced.
