Superman Takes Flight with a Stellar $217M Global Debut

Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated reboot of “Superman” soared at the global box office this weekend. The film raked in a whopping $122 million domestically and $95 million internationally, culminating in a total opening of $217 million worldwide.

The film, directed by James Gunn, stands as the third-largest opening weekend of 2025. It signifies a pivotal launch for the new cinematic universe of DC Studios.

The star-studded cast includes David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The movie has been well-received, boasting an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- CinemaScore from audiences.

The opening gross surpassed the $116.6 million debut of 2013’s “Man of Steel,” setting a new record for the biggest opening weekend for a standalone Superman film.

Nearly 50% of the worldwide gross came from premium formats, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and other large format screens. IMAX alone contributed a significant $30 million.

The film’s success is particularly noteworthy as it kickstarts Gunn and Peter Safran’s ambitious 10-year plan for DC Studios. The duo has several exciting projects in the pipeline, with “Supergirl” and “Clayface” already in development.

The robust performance of “Superman” helps Warner Bros. maintain its impressive 2025 streak, following hits like “A Minecraft Movie” and “Sinners.”
