Celebrating a Century of Quantum Mechanics: 2025 Marks the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology

The United Nations has officially declared 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ). This declaration commemorates the centennial anniversary of the foundational framework of quantum mechanics, a groundbreaking concept introduced by Werner Heisenberg in his 1925 paper.

This year-long global celebration is a testament to the profound impact quantum science has had on modern technology and everyday life. Quantum mechanics has been instrumental in enabling countless innovations that shape our world, from the semiconductor chips in our smartphones to GPS navigation systems, MRI scanners, and laser technology.

“Quantum mechanics is a prime example of the practical impact that an abstract physical theory can have,” noted physics experts supporting the initiative.

Throughout 2025, a series of events are being organized worldwide to raise public awareness about the significance of quantum science. These include:

  • Research presentations
  • Educational programs
  • Conferences

Moreover, the Hubble Space Telescope is also celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Since its launch, it has observed over 100 million objects and contributed to more than 21,000 scientific studies.
