Google Faces EU Antitrust Complaint Over AI Overviews Feature
Google has been hit with a new antitrust complaint in the European Union, filed by a group of independent publishers concerned about its AI Overviews feature. According to a document seen by Reuters, the complaint accuses Google of abusing its dominant position in online search by placing AI-generated summaries at the top of search results.
The publishers argue that these AI-powered search summaries—designed to provide direct answers to queries—are diverting traffic away from their websites, threatening their visibility and revenue. The group has also requested interim measures to halt the feature, claiming it is causing irreparable harm to their businesses.
AI Overviews, part of Google’s broader push into artificial intelligence, generates comprehensive summaries that appear above traditional web links. While convenient for users, critics argue that it undermines the open web by reducing the incentive to visit original content sources.
This complaint marks the latest in a series of regulatory challenges facing Google’s AI initiatives in Europe, where the company is already under scrutiny from multiple digital regulations.
